I've used a JD 870/2WD on my 13 acres for eight years with no complaints, except for the lack of a FEL. I'm finally debating whether to replace the 870 with a new JD 4WD/FEL, versus adding a 420 FEL to my 870. I've gotten conflicting opinions from JD dealers about the wisdom of adding a FEL to the 870 -- about it being only 2WD, and not having enough hydraulics for a loader (not to mention that they want to sell me a new JD).
Anybody have experience using a 2WD 870 with a FEL? Is having only 2WD a problem, and are the 870's hydraulics (pump capacity rated at 8.1 gpm) adequate for a FEL (I will only use FEL occasionally – no regular, heavy duty usage).
Thanks.
David

If you're going to use it like a fork lift it would probably work for you. But if you ever need to dig into a pile or move forward while you lift, the front wheel drive is necessary. A two wheel drive will tend to lift the rear wheels with loss of traction. You probably won't get your money's worth out of the FEL with 2WD.

I was using my FEL to move some shale from a pile in the yard and I wasn't getting much in the bucket compared to earlier in the day. I finally remembered that I took it out of 4 wheel drive to go accross the yard and never put it back in 4 wheel drive. The loader just wouldn't do much unless it is in 4 wheel drive. ....

I have 870 jd's
The hydralic will be just fine.
2wdr is the problem
You wont move unless you weight the rear end.
Not worth the price. ....
